These are two preserved buildings, of which the first is located on 13 Naumachias Limnos and 14 Dodekanisos streets and its neighbor, which is located on 11 Naumachias Limnos & Ol. Diamanti 5 in Thessaloniki’s historical center. The two buildings are known as “M. Sakka – A. Michailidou Tobacco Stores”, were erected in 1937 according to the plans of the architect A. Nikopoulos and by design they were a single aesthetic and functional ensemble.
In these buildings, all the trends of -then- modern architecture can be observed, integrated into an eclecticism, enriched with the forms of the modern movement and Art Deco, which seeks as an architectural practice to give the buildings as such the necessary differentiating and symbolic value and to make them dynamic points of reference in the new image of the city.
Remarkable characteristics of the tobacco warehouse are the organization of the facades in horizontal and vertical zones with embossed bands grouped between the openings, which create a remarkable oncoplastic composition. At the same time, the coloring, the alternation between built and voids, the differentiation of materials (embossed bands, aprons of openings, masonry, windows/skylights) create an interesting sample of industrial architectural heritage.
The architectural proposal for the renovation of the buildings seeks their functional integration, as they functioned immediately after their construction, their transformation into a 4-star hotel and condo hotel, as well as highlighting their special architectural identity.
After the completion of the project, the new hotel will have 138 rooms and 50 apartments, a restaurant, cafe, bar, gym, wellness center, multipurpose center, as well as a roof garden with an open bar.
